University of Pennsylvania Presentation

Students are invited to attend a presentation by the University of Pennsylvania at UTS on May 4th at 7:00 pm.

What goes into an admissions decision at a highly selective college or university in the U.S.? This engaging workshop gives you an inside look into the admissions committee room, exploring the many factors that guide an admissions office as it admits a class of talented students.

Students and parents will learn all about:

  • Types of universities/colleges in the U.S.
  • Admissions & Financial Aid Lingo (Early Decision vs. Early Action vs. Regular Decision) at U.S. Colleges
  • What is a highly selective school and why should I consider applying?
  • How to approach the process in thoughtful, healthy and reflective ways
  • Financial aid case studies – the differences among grants, loans and scholarships in the U.S.
  • Committee discussions at Penn and other selective colleges

Warrior Within Project

Warrior Within (www.warriorwithin.ca) is a project that centres around the creation of a short fictional short film (shot in July, 2016) that uses metaphor and imagery to help engage students in their understanding of stress, anxiety and how to individually develop their own resilience.

This creative project also involved the student exploration of the film’s themes -stress, anxiety and resilience – through painting, photography, music composition, documentary film, creative writing, dance, blog writing, directing and cinematography – alongside the 4 day shoot and under the guidance of mentors in the field.

This short film, and all its creative facets, went on to inspire a student-driven curriculum (since the new year, a student group has been creating the lesson plans, student exercises, discussion points, etc.) aimed at filling the dearth of creative pedagogy regarding positive mental health for youth.

Here is a recent article from the Toronto Star, as well as a clip from Global News – both get to the heart of the initiative.

On May 17th starting at 7pm, Warrior Within will be celebrated at a gala at the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto.
Tickets can be bought at the door, or on our website, www.warriorwithin.ca  .
