On a cold, wet and windy morning at Pickering College the Crestwood Under 12 soccer team took to the field missing both of their regular season captains as they were unable to play in the tournament due to injury and travel overseas. Our acting Captains for the day were Mason Mac Murray and Erin Mann.
The opening game was played against the host Pickering College. We created several chances to score but the conditions were proving difficult for both teams. Despite the weather Crestwood continued with their controlled passing game and won 4-0. Jesse Codron scored 2 highlighted by a fantastic header from a Blake Haber cross after some fine build up play. Blake also scored one himself and Alex Korda contributed with a goal.
The semi-final at was set for 11:00a.m against TCS. On a large open field the conditions had continued to worsen and the standard of play dropped. However, good link up play sent Jack Hendry through on goal and he neatly tucked away his chance to give Crestwood the lead. TCS were denied an equalizer when Tim Kufner pulled off a fine save and Peter Keane was on hand to slide across the goal line preventing the ball from crossing the line. With only 10 minutes to go a sneaky shot squeezed past our goalkeeper to tie the game and send us into penalty kicks. Both teams missed their first shot and then another miss from TCS was followed by a goal from Alex K. Another miss from TCS and a Cole Eichler goal for Crestwood was followed by a superb save from Tim in goal which won the game and sent Crestwood into the final.
The Championship Final was set for 1:30pm against HTS and the rain had finally abated. The Crestwood team took to the muddy field looking a little bit tired but determined to do their very best. Blake Haber opened the scoring for Crestwood with a fine finish. Leading 1-0, Crestwood was working hard and were rewarded with a corner kick. The ball was sent into the penalty box where Gijs Noteboom spectacularly volleyed it home. The score remained 2-0 until 5 minutes before the end when HTS scored narrowing the lead to just 1 goal. Crestwood were not to be denied their first ever U12 Soccer Championship win and dug deep to complete the victory, finally prevailing 2-1.
