Subban, Karl

Karl Subban was born July 9, 1950 in Portland Cottage, Jamaica.  He lived there until he was 12, and he has strong and positive memories of those years, including his emerging interest in sports, which would prove to be a fundamental theme later in life.  In his youth that included a lot of time spent developing his cricket skills; the sports in Canada would be different, but the effort and initiative would be the same, as he transmitted that love to his own sons.  Karl’s family immigrated to Canada in the 1960s, a time when many Jamaicans were heading north.  They settled in Sudbury, where Karl adapted to life in his new country. Karl’s talk touched on many more of his personal and family stories, and he also touched on an array of sports-related issues, including the positive diversity he has seen come to “Canada’s game”, as well as some of the downsides, including social media and its connection to sports gambling.  Karl is a coach too, and many of his inspirational ideals came through in this talk, as he urged the students to pursue their dreams and passions.   Karl spoke at Crestwood during our Black History Month assembly in February 2025, and he was kind enough to join a group of history students and student-athletes to share his inspirational words in an oral history interview too.
