Nowaczyk, Alice

Alice Nowaczyk was born November 7, 1924 in Bodfari in north Wales, not too far from Wrexham.  Her father was a Great War veteran who also saw service in World War Two; he had re-enlisted in the reserves prior to WW2, and when that conflict began he found himself at Dunkirk, where he was wounded and became quite ill.  Alice recalls visiting him in a soldiers’ convalescent hospital; later in civilian life he was a stoker and stationary engineer. Alice grew up in the village with her mother and three older siblings, and she has many fond memories of life from that time, from playing in the woods  to listening to the BBC Childrens’ Hour.  She also remembers the lack of luxuries, as she grew up in a time without indoor plumbing and even electricity in her early years.  Alice’s older brother joined the navy in the immediate prewar years and with the declaration of war he was sent off to fight, stationed in the Mediterranean for a time.  He became quite ill though and was home on leave when his ship was torpedoed with the loss of many lives.  Alice’s older sisters went off to work too, with one in the Land Army and the other a nanny for a wealthy family.  Alice decided in her own right to become a nurse and she worked at the Denbigh Infirmary in North Wales.  Alice’s mother took in two child evacuees from Liverpool during this time too; she also helped to navigate the family through the difficult times of the Blitz and wartime rationing.  Alice worked through the war, doing her bit, and she, like everyone, greeted Victory Day with joy and relief.  She also met a young man from Poland named Sigmund, and the two of them struck up a relationship that would eventually take them to Canada, where they would find their way in the postwar world.  Once in Toronto, Alice secured work at Sunnybrook Hospital, where she cared for the veterans for 43 years.  Alice Nowaczyk was interviewed by Scott Masters at her home in Toronto over two occasions in December 2024 and January 2025.
