Evelyn Levine was born on June 25, 1917 in Hamilton, Ontario. Growing up Jewish during that time meant dealing with a lot of anti-Semitism. Evelyn was unable to get an appointment at a hospital; she had to leave Canada to go to Boston just to get into a nursing school. Evelyn grew up in the interwar period, dealing with the highs and lows of the economy, and the memory of family lost in the Great War. Her own fiance and other family fought in the Second World War, when Evelyn was a nurse. He came home a hero, and the two married and built their lives together in postwar Canada. Evelyn was interviewed for this project by her great grandson Nathan Galansky in early 2020, when Evelyn was 103 years old.
