On Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Jull’s Canadian Literature class welcomed Jennifer Jones and Walter Lindstone, two guest speakers from the Native Canadian Cultural Centre’s Aboriginal Education Outreach Program. The class explores issues of Canadian identity, and the guest speakers addressed how Canadian identity fits into a Native-Canadian perspective. Ms. Jones and Mr. Lindstone shared their personal stories about growing up in a mixed race family and re-discovering their Aboriginal cultural heritage. The students were challenged by the speakers to discover the origins and importance of their own names, as this has great spiritual significance in a Native-Canadian context. They also learned about how a variety of words in both English and French were “borrowed” from different native languages. The class will be continuing its unit on Native-Canadian literature over the next two weeks.
