CPC will be a Single-Use Plastic Water Bottle Free School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you may have heard, we have made great strides in reducing plastic waste in our cafeteria.  Students have been learning to sort various types of waste into appropriate bins as we aim to have a plastic-free cafeteria by eliminating single-use plastic cutlery and plates.

Yesterday in Town Hall, the Green Team shared the following facts about single-use plastic water bottles:

  1. While tap water is regulated by Health Canada, there is no regulation on bottled water.
  2. Twenty thousand plastic water bottles are purchased each second.
  3. In Ontario, over 1 billion plastic water bottles are sent to the landfill each year.

As a community, we have decided to address these concerns with a new school policy. Starting January 2020, Crestwood Preparatory College will be a single-use plastic water bottle free school. Students, staff and visitors will not be permitted to bring single-use plastic water bottles into the school.  There will be a bin located by the front entrance to collect and recycle any bottles that are unintentionally brought to school.

Our community is encouraged to bring their favourite reusable water bottles and fill them at water filling stations located throughout the school. Reusable water bottles will also be available for purchase from our Green Team.

Our goal is to be ahead of the federal government plan to ban single-use plastics in 2021.  While it may take some time to adjust to this new policy, we thank you and your family for your cooperation with this student-led initiative.

Thank you for your continued support.
