A Busy Week For Social Studies Department

Another View of History

The Crestwood Social Studies department and the YARRD/Me to We club are continuing their explorations into Toronto’s rich and diverse history.

Last week, Mr. Masters took members of the senior history classes to Markham, to attend a symposium on the Pacific theatre of World War Two; students heard from Japanese historian Tamaki Matsuoka, who told them about Japan’s invasion of China in 1937, reminding students of the many interpretations of the war.

Syrian Refugees Share Their Story

This past Tuesday, Crestwood welcomed the Malandi family, who shared their story with the grade 12 World Issues class, along with many YARRD/Me to We members. The Malandis left Syria in 2012, fleeing the war. Over the next few years they passed through a number of countries in the Middle East, before emigrating to Canada in January 2016. Their story reminded students and staff that the distant events in the news do impact our local community, something that we will be taking up in one last YARRD/Me to We initiative before the year is out!
